Most DSG Problems Are Not What You Think They Are.
This is the single most important thing to understand about Audi and VW gearbox issues.
DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox. It’s a dual clutch transmission system used across the Volkswagen Group including Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda. When a DSG starts misbehaving, the instinct is to panic because you’ve heard horror stories about gearbox bills.
Here’s the reality. In most cases you do not need a full overhaul. The two most common culprits are:
The dual clutch itself, which wears out over time and causes shuddering, juddering or hesitation especially at low speeds and on takeoff.
The mechatronic unit, which is the electro-hydraulic control module that manages the clutch engagement. When this fails you get jerky shifts, fault codes, or the car refusing to select gears properly.
Fix the right one and your DSG feels like new. We diagnose first, then tell you exactly which one your car needs. Not both. Not a full overhaul. Just what is actually broken.

DQ200 or DQ250? This Matters for Your Repair Cost.
Not all DSG gearboxes are the same. Volkswagen Group uses several different DSG variants and the repair scope and cost depends entirely on which one your car has.
DQ200: 7-Speed Dry Clutch DSG
This is the smaller, lighter DSG unit found in most compact Audi and VW models with smaller engines. If your car has a 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 or 1.5 litre TSI or TDI engine and it is a hatchback, small SUV or compact sedan, there is a very high chance it is running the DQ200 dry clutch.

Skoda: Fabia (2010 onwards), Octavia (2008 to 2020 base engine variants), Karoq and Kamiq (1.0 to 1.5 TSI), Yeti (older 1.2 TSI)
Quick rule of thumb: smaller engine, smaller car, dry clutch DQ200. Higher output engines (2.0 TSI/TDI, GTI, Cupra, RS, S3 and performance variants) usually come with the wet clutch DQ250 or DQ381 instead.
DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and Other Wet-Clutch DSG Variants
These are the higher-torque DSG units found in more powerful Audi and VW models. More robust than the DQ200 but not immune to mechatronic faults and clutch wear.

When a Full Gearbox Overhaul Is Actually Needed
For conventional automatic gearbox Audi models, a full overhaul may be required where the internal components have worn beyond what a targeted repair can address. This applies to certain A4, A5, A6, Q7 and S5 models depending on the gearbox type and condition.
Every overhaul covers all the consumable internal parts:

VAG Diagnostic Scan Every job starts with a specialist scan using VAG diagnostic equipment. This reads the actual fault codes for your specific Audi, VW, SEAT or Skoda, the way the manufacturer intended. A generic OBD scanner is not going to cut it on a DSG.

Volkswagen Gearbox Issue
If you are driving a Volkswagen or Audi with a dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), you typically do not need a full gearbox overhaul when issues arise. The most common problems are usually related to either the clutch or the mechatronic unit. Since the clutch is a mechanical component, the symptoms are usually more consistent, such as a noticeable loss of power or the inability to engage either the odd or even-numbered gears, which is a characteristic of dual-clutch systems. On the other hand, if the mechatronic unit is faulty, the gear shifts tend to be erratic, and you may notice error messages on the dashboard. In some cases, the issue may temporarily resolve after restarting the engine. My DSG is shuddering when I pull away. Do I need a full overhaul? Probably not. Shuddering on takeoff, especially at low speed, is the classic symptom of a worn DQ200 dry clutch. This is a common and well-understood issue on Audi and VW models with smaller engines. A new clutch at S$1,650 typically resolves it completely. We confirm after the free diagnostic scan.
What’s the difference between the mechatronic and the clutch? Which one does my car need? The dual clutch is the mechanical friction component that engages and disengages the gears. How do I know if my car has the DQ200 or the DQ250? Quick rule of thumb: if your car has a 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 or 1.5 litre engine and it’s a compact hatch, small SUV or sedan, it’s almost certainly the DQ200 dry clutch.
