Different European car brands use fundamentally different gearbox technologies. The repair approach, the parts involved, and the cost depend entirely on which system your car has. Getting this wrong means paying for the wrong fix.
Here is a practical breakdown of the main gearbox types found in continental cars on Singapore roads, and what they typically need when things go wrong.
PDK: Porsche Doppelkupplung
Found in Porsche 911, Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne and Macan. Porsche’s 7-speed dual clutch transmission is one of the fastest shifting gearboxes ever fitted to a road car. When it develops faults, the instinct is to assume the worst.
Most of the time it isn’t. PDK problems are usually sensor related or involve clutch pack wear rather than full gearbox failure. A targeted PDK sensor replacement using original Porsche parts runs around S$3,800. This resolves the majority of PDK complaints without touching the gearbox itself. A full overhaul is needed far less often than most people fear.

DSG: Volkswagen Group Direct Shift Gearbox
Fitted across Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda models. Two main variants to know about.
The DQ200 is the 7-speed dry clutch unit found in smaller engine models across the A1, A3, Polo, Golf, Jetta, T-Roc, Ibiza, Fabia, Octavia and more. Quick rule of thumb: 1.0 to 1.5 litre engine in a compact car, very likely DQ200. Repairs here are usually either the dual clutch at S$1,650 or a recon mechatronic unit at S$1,400 with 6 months warranty. A full gearbox overhaul is rarely needed.
The DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500 are the wet clutch variants found in higher-output models. More robust but not immune to mechatronic faults. Recon mechatronic starts from S$2,200 with 6 months warranty.
Full DSG overhauls are uncommon. Most issues are clutch or mechatronic problems and that is what we fix.
Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic, 9G-Tronic and Other AT Units
Mercedes conventional automatic gearboxes, found across the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLC, GLE and others, are well-built units that can develop internal wear over time. These may require a full overhaul when internal components wear beyond serviceable limits. Diagnosis with Mercedes XENTRY before committing to any scope of work.
For Mercedes dual clutch models including the CLA, GLA and GLB, the issue is almost always the dual clutch or mechatronic unit rather than the full gearbox. A targeted repair is usually what’s needed here.
BMW ZF Automatics (6HP and 8HP)
BMW’s ZF-sourced 6-speed and 8-speed automatic gearboxes are found across the 1 Series through 7 Series and the full X range. Reliable units that respond well to a proper overhaul when internal wear develops. Diagnosis with BMW ISTA. The BMW X1 and 216 have a specific known issue with coolant contamination from a leaking autocooler. If this applies to your car, a flush will not fix it. A full overhaul including torque converter and autocooler replacement is the only proper solution.
ZF Automatics in Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Maserati, Bentley and Rolls-Royce
The ZF 8HP automatic gearbox is one of the most widely used transmission units in the premium and luxury segment. It is fitted, in various configurations, to Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Maserati, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce models alongside many BMW and Audi applications.
This is fundamentally the same gearbox architecture across these brands, though each manufacturer tunes the software and sometimes modifies the hardware for their specific application. When it develops faults the approach is similar: diagnose with the correct brand-specific tool, identify the actual fault, and either carry out a targeted repair or a full overhaul depending on what the gearbox actually needs.
Peugeot, Renault and Citroen: EDC and AT Units
French brands fitted to Singapore-registered cars commonly use either the EDC dual clutch transmission (Efficient Dual Clutch, which functions similarly to DSG) or a conventional automatic. EDC faults are typically clutch or mechatronic related rather than requiring a full overhaul. Conventional AT units may need an overhaul depending on condition and mileage. We diagnose before advising.
Ferrari, Lamborghini: DCT and Single Clutch
High-performance Italian dual clutch and automated manual systems. These are specialist units that require a specific approach. We assess each car individually after a full diagnostic scan. Not every workshop in Singapore has experience with these. We do.
MINI: BMW-Sourced Gearboxes

For models where a full overhaul is the right call, here is exactly what is covered.
Every overhaul includes all the consumable internal components: clutch packs, all internal seals, all gaskets, transmission filter, and the correct manufacturer-specification transmission oil for your exact model and gearbox variant.
What is not included as standard: external components like the engine, flywheel, control modules, torque converter, valve body, oil pan, and autocooler. These are not replaced unless they are found to be faulty during diagnosis. If something external is contributing to the gearbox problem, we tell you before we start and include it in the quote. You do not pay for parts your car does not need.
The exception is cases of contamination or external component failure that have caused the internal damage, such as the BMW coolant contamination scenario. In those cases the external parts causing the problem are included in the repair scope and quoted upfront.

How do I know if I need a full overhaul or just a targeted repair?

Many European gearbox problems, especially in PDK, DSG and Mercedes DCT equipped cars, are targeted repairs rather than full overhauls. We tell you which one applies to your car.
I drive a Jaguar or Land Rover. Are ZF gearbox overhauls something you cover?

1. Unusual Noises
